Just say there is some chocolate on your arm, how are you going to clean it up? If you’re like me, you would wash it with water… Right? Learn some tips on using a ‘bum-gun’ in South East Asia!

So why do we use paper after we do a number two? After moving to Vietnam in 2015, I quickly discovered the ‘bum-gun’. I have never been able to comfortably use TP since.

When you think about it, using a ‘bum-gun’ to clean up, just makes more sense! Not only do you feel clean, but you are also saving some trees and the best part… You can clean the toilet with it too! No more TP and no more using that grotty toilet brush (which, let’s be honest, is gross!).

For the first time ‘bum gun’ users

Being your first time using the famous ‘bum-gun’ you should make sure that you follow some of these tips. After all, it is essentially a hose with a gun like nozzle; water sprays out!

Get the angle right!

First, you should start at the back, make sure you are pointing more or less directly up and a little to the back.

That way you won’t be spraying your face or up your back with ice cold water…

Check the pressure…

Not everyone is going to be able to deal with a fire hydrant like pressure spraying their bum! Water pressure depends on the building and how many people are using the water.

So before you just pull the trigger back, lightly press to check the pressure and adjust to your preference.

Be thorough

To make sure that you get all the nasty bits, make sure you spray all around the required areas. If you’re unsure, you can use a bit to dry and check (don’t lie, you did when just using TP).

How do you dry off!?

Some people simply spray, stand up and do a bit of a shake, others prefer to use some TP to dry off. Either way that’s up to you.

In most countries, you will find ‘bum-guns’ like Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia etc the climate is tropical, so you are sweaty and a little water won’t make any difference.

Don’t get too close!

Now I beg that you don’t push the nozzle right up there, that’s not going to end well and defeats the hygiene benefits along with offering other risks…

Leave a few inches or you risk giving yourself a colonoscopy!

For the ladies.

As I am not a lady, I can’t go into much detail (pure lack of experience) that being said as you might notice I am quite open to these kinds of conversations… So I have it on good authority that ladies can (and should) use the ‘bum-gun’ for both number ones and twos.

Like stated above, a bit of TP can be used to dry off but for general hygiene, the ‘bum-gun’ will offer great results!

You can get a ‘bum gun’ in the west!

Wonderful news for all those in the west suffering with TP! Most toilets are installed with an additional water outlet at the back!

Simply run down to your hardware store to grab a ‘bum-gun’ (if they don’t have one, you can get them online).

Make sure you turn off the water before you install it!
