Everyone should get travel insurance once they leave their home country, foreign countries will not help you pay medical bills! Here is more about travel insurance and why it’s important!
1. No one is going to pay your medical bills for you!
Unless you have parents or family with loads of cash, you might end up struggling to pay off medical bills in the case you get sick or injured abroad.
When you are travelling abroad, it isn’t just your phone or laptop you need to be careful of…
After 5 years of living and travelling in Asia, I have not only experienced unforeseen accidents myself but I have also seen and heard of many people in financial trouble, simply due to their lack of travel insurance.
2. Some hospitals don’t treat you unless you pay…
This is more common for locals in Asia but it does happen to foreigners too.
It is common for you to see people starting GoFundMe campaigns because they have been in an accident or fell ill and needed to be hospitalised.
The reason people have to resort to GoFundMe is simply a lack of travel insurance or international health insurance.
When you can’t get the money to pay for your treatment, many hospitals won’t continue treatment or will treat you and not let you leave until your bill is paid, keep in mind you get charged while you are there waiting to get money.
3. Your home country won’t pay
I am waiting to be proven wrong here, no country that I know of will pay for their citizen’s international health care.
Even if you get in legal trouble, your government can’t and won’t be able to do much to help.
Some countries will pay the bill for your treatment but require you to pay back the loan (often with interest).
4. it’s not that expensive
There are so many plans available and prices for all travellers, from short term to long term you don’t need to take the risk.
Companies like regency for expats offer cover from US $60.00 per month or our favourite (World Nomads) from just US $90.00 per month.
World Nomads may seem more expensive but they cover much more than just health care, unlike regency for expats who focus more on health and hospital cover.
We suggest World Nomads for trips up to 6 months and Regency for Expats for those looking for more long term Health and Hospital cover.
5. It’s super easy to get covered!
Getting covered takes only a few minutes, simply visit World Nomads or Regency for Expats to get a quote or you can contact us to help arrange the best cover for you.
